Member Highlight – Al Brose
Long time member Al Brose started in Aeromodeling in the summer of 1952.
Al built a few sport model kits and then progressed to the “speed” world of airplane design.
The planes that Al flew in the speed category were hand build from balsa and bass wood. Al made up the plans and cut out the parts by hand – There were no kits for speed at that time.
Al entered his first contest in August of 1953 in “B-Speed”, .29 size engine and won first place at 129.44 miles per hour. Al was hooked on the U-Line control speed category. Al’s next contests were in 1954 (3rd place using a .19 size engine) and in 1955 (2nd place using a .60 size engine at 130.67 miles per hour).
The engines Al used were:
Dooling 61; Dooling 29; McCoy 60 and McCoy 29 (Pictured)
Some of the planes Al scratch built for Speed flying are pictured below.
Thanks Al for your dedication and love for the Aeromodeling hobby!
